A column that’s too narrow cuts off your data with an ellipsis. A column that’s too wide wastes screen space. Autofit sizes a column to exactly the width of its longest visible value, instantly.
It works on one column at a time, or on every column at once if you select them first. The fit is based on rendered text, so font size and cell styling all factor in.
There’s no built-in keyboard shortcut for autofit column width in Google Sheets on Windows or Mac. The fastest way to do it is double-clicking the right edge of the column header.

Autofit Column Width Keyboard Shortcut ( Mac)
No native keyboard shortcut on Mac. Use the double-click method below.
Unlike Excel (which has Alt + H + O + I), Google Sheets simply doesn’t offer a key combo for this on either platform. The double-click on the column border is the standard approach, and once you get used to it, it’s pretty quick.
How to Autofit Column Width in Google Sheets (Step by Step)
- Hover your cursor over the right edge of the column header, between two column letters at the top of the sheet.
- The cursor changes to a horizontal resize handle (a vertical line with arrows on each side).
- Double-click. The column snaps to fit its widest visible value.
To autofit multiple columns at once, select them first (drag across the column letters, or Ctrl-click each one), then double-click any selected edge. Every selected column resizes in one go.
Another Way to Autofit Column Width
Right-click the column letter and pick “Resize column” from the menu. In the dialog, choose “Fit to data” and click OK.
It takes one or two extra clicks compared to the double-click method, but it’s a handy option if you prefer menus or if you want to autofit the entire sheet. Select all columns first (click the top-left corner above row 1), then right-click any column letter and go Resize column > Fit to data.
Things to Watch For
- Autofit measures the WIDEST value, including the header. A long heading forces a wide column even when the data underneath is short.
- Wrapped cells don’t drive autofit wider. If text wrapping is on, the cell counts as the column’s current width. Turn wrapping off if you want autofit to expand to the full text.
- Autofit the whole sheet at once. Click the top-left corner (above row 1, left of column A) to select everything, then right-click any column letter and Resize column > Fit to data. Every column on the sheet snaps to fit.
- The fit reflects what’s on screen. Hidden rows don’t get measured. Filter the data first if you only want certain rows to drive the width.
